Frequently Asked Questions

We hope that you will find answers to your questions here.  You can find out more about our process or email us for further information.

Is JAM Post a translation service?

No. We are primarily an editing service. Our customers write documents in English (not Japanese) and we find editors in the same specialty, who then edit the document so it is suitable to be published in an English language journal.

We do a limited amount of translating, so if you are an experienced Japanese to English translator in a medical field, we welcome you to register.

We are sorry but we do not need translators of languages other than Japanese.

Who should register?

We welcome native English speakers who have experience editing or writing medical manuscripts.  Our customers are researchers who write highly specialized documents, requiring our editors to be equally knowledgeable.  Most of our editors are PhDs or MDs, but this is not a requirement.

I've registered but I haven't heard anything from you.

We will carefully review the qualifications of all editors who register.  After reviewing your registration information and resume we will notify you, within three days, if you have the right qualifications or if we need further information.

If you have been accepted, it may take a while before there is a document that matches your specialty, so please be patient.

How are fees calculated?

The editing fee varies with the complexity of the document, the level of editing required, and the turnaround time.  In addition, because our customers pay in Japanese Yen, the exchange rate is also a factor. The basic fee is $10 per double-spaced manuscript page with adjustments made for the above factors.

How and when will I be paid?

Editors in the USA are paid on the 1st of every month in US dollars by direct deposit or check. Find out more about payments.

Editors residing outside of the USA are paid by PayPal in US dollars.

Will I get manuscripts only in my specialty?

We try to send editors documents closely matched to their specialty. We encourage editors to review the documents before accepting orders. Occasionally, you might receive a document that is not your specialty. If you feel that you can't edit because of the specialty or any other reason, you can decline the order.

The documents required more time than I expected.  What should I do?

Editors are expected to preview the document before accepting. If you feel that the document requires more time than you are able to give, you can decline the order.

How am I evaluated?

Customers have the opportunity to evaluate each order but only a small percentage of them actually fill out the website evaluation forms. The evaluation forms include ratings for overall editing quality, attention to detail, understanding of content, useful comments, and quality of follow-up.

If a customer has completed an evaluation, an Evaluation link is shown next to the order on your Account Page. The Evaluation Summary shows averages of all the evaluations. All 0s means that no evaluations have been completed yet.

JAM Post administrators also evaluate the editors and provide feedback by email, especially for new editors. In general, if you continue to get orders, it means you are doing a good job and there are orders in your specialty.
